August Events in NYC
Round out your summer in the Big Apple by taking part in one of these exciting events, all designed to help you beat the city heat. While August means that back-to-school days are just around the corner, that’s all the more reason to take advantage of these carefree days while they last. Here are just a few of the options available for residents and visitors this month:
Time Out New York’s Battle of the Burger 2018, LIC Landing, Long Island
There’s no better season than summer for celebrating the awesomeness of that all-American favorite, the burger. Hop down to the waterfront and help decide which burger will rule them all in 2018.
Afropunk Festival 2018, City Park, Brooklyn
Despite the specificity of the name, this festival actually celebrates a wide array of multicultural arts. An outdoor market and bevy of food trucks rounds out the fun, all set to the beat of some of the greatest hip-hop artists around.
Shakespeare in the Park, Public Theater
This event has been known to beckon A-list stars like Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, and Al Pacino, to name just a few. The series is free and open to the public, and has been entertaining guests since 1962.
Jazz Age Lawn Party, Governors Island
Step off the ferry and start channeling your inner Gatsby or Daisy at this tribute to the Roaring 20’s. Flapper-style attire is encouraged, and the theme encompasses everything from the décor to the food and drink.
The U.S. Open Tennis Tournament, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park
Even the most hardened sports agnostics out there have heard of this one. Held over a period of two weeks, this base on the Grand Slam brings some of the hottest names in tennis to the city that never sleeps. Even if you’ve never watched a match before, the event has plenty to offer, from live music to international cuisine.
The Decemberists + M. Ward, Windsor Terrace
This Portland, Oregon band is scheduled to play at Windsor Terrace on August 14, and it’s an event that no indie-rock fan will want to miss. The bandleaders list Depeche Mode and New Order as inspiration, so if those names strike an immediate chord, you should look into procuring a seat.
